The artist behind the backdrops

Founded in 2021, Akka Backdrops makes hand painted canvas backdrops for photographers. Behind the company is visual artist Nadja Mikkilä, who has painted both portraits and abstract work for twenty years.

In Nordic mythology, Akka is the goddess of the earth. Akka backdrops draw their inspiration from Nordic nature, so the palette is made up mainly of natural colours.

The interest in painted photographic backdrops grew out of life with a photographer: combining a painting background with studio work felt like a natural step.

Artistic painting and painting backdrops feed each other. A technique learned in one finds a use in the other. The work is never one-sided, it is a continuous series of small discoveries. And like every painting, every painted backdrop is a work in its own right.
